PWR Performance Products has wrapped up a bumper year by being named the Gold Coast Business of the Year.

The automotive cooling specialists, which are based at Yatala, received the honour at a gala function at Jupiter’s Hotel and Casino on Saturday.

PWR exports its systems all over the world and boasts Formula 1 and NASCAR teams among its customers, along with Volswagen Touregs, Aston Martin and Porsche Cup cars.

Race car driver Paul Weel, who set up the company with his father Kees Weel in 1997, said the award was an exciting honour for the company and its more than 60 staff.

Mr Weel said PWR was still operated as a family business, despite achieving 20 per vent growth last year.

“We don’t spend a lot of money on promotion,” he said.

“Word of mouth is the best advertisement as far as we are concerned.”

Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards president Ian Cousins said: ”As a specialist manufacturer of radiations and intercoolers, the PWR brand has fast-tracked its way to becoming a major brand in top tier motorsport.”

The Gold Coast Suns picked up the Mayors Corporate Social Responsibility honour at the Gold Coast Business Awards.

Mr Cousins said the Suns were committed to supporting the community through a range of programs and activities and in 2011 contributed 5000 hours to supporting charities and causes.

The Magic Millions business took out the honours in the Tourism, Hospitality and Events category.

The company, which specialises in integrated vegetation management, has grown from a one-man business to a multi-million-dollar organisation servicing government and commercial customers between northern NSW and the Sunshine Coast.

Burleigh Brewing Company won the Mayor’s Innovation GC Award.

The Emerging Business Award was won by ICON Software Solutions, which specialists in providing web-based software to councils in the areas of online planning, electronic lodgement, corporate reporting and work project management.

Coolabah Tree Cafes won the Retail, Wholesale and Distribution Award.

Sebastian Karsas, from Proof Engineers, is one of the finalists in the 2011 Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.

Mr Karsas is one of the directors of the engineering company that uses the art of road stabilisation with engineering principles to build better roads in remote areas that have material and cost restraints.

Since the company started in February, its revenue had reached $1.5 million and growth next year is expected to be in the range of 50% to 70%.

David Handel and Peter Parkinson are two other directors of Proof Engineers who nominated the engineer graduate for the 2011 Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.

Awards founder Jason Oxenbridge said the finalists each brought key quality to their respective organisations.

“It’s overwhelming to see such incredible dedication and tenacity by all of the finalists, but what inspires the judges each year is the leadership qualities they possess,” he said.

Business saddles up for 100km charity ride from city to Coast

THERE are bound to be a few cases of saddle soreness around town in a little over a week, but the Gold Coast tourism industry should be smiling.

Cyclists are gearing up again for the Wilson HTM Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle Challenge on October 9.

The event is now in its seventh year and is expected to attract about 10,000 participants. Wilson HTM’s Gold Coast boss Fred Witherow says some of those numbers will translate into room nights for Gold Coast hotels and apartments, as well as bums on seats for restaurants.

The 100km bike ride, which starts at South Bank and winds its way to Beenleigh, Coomera and Helensvale before finishing at the Broadwater Parklands, attracts a who’s who of Queensland businesses.

The Airport Link Project team is sitting at the top of the fundraising table at present with $13,783 in the kitty for heart disease and diabetes.

Gold Coast resource services company Reynolds Soil Technologies is fielding a team of 25 alongside Gold Coaster, Proof Engineers.

RST director and cycling enthusiast David Handel says the mining industry will be out in force, including teams from BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, as heart disease and diabetes were on the rise among mine workers.

He says the highly mechanised mining industry these days was sedentary in nature and many miners were leading an inactive lifestyle.

Mining company takes up the challenge

Reynolds Soil Technology (RST) will put foot to the pedal next month, as the mining resources company takes part in the annual Wilson HTM Cycle Challenge to raise awareness for diabetes and heart disease across Queensland.

To be held on Sunday, October 9, the annual cycling event hosted by Bicycle Queensland is expected to attract more than 10,000 participants and raised over $150,000 in funds for Diabetes Australia – Queensland and the Heart Foundation.

RST’s decision to enter a team of 25 in the 100km bike ride from Brisbane to Gold Coast, came after Diabetes Queensland released new figures this year revealing three quarters of Australian miners are currently overweight and at risk of type 2 diabetes.

Obesity and type 2 diabetes are also directly linked to heart disease, which is now the most common cause of death in Australia.

RST technical and development director and cycling enthusiast David Handel said the event is extremely close to home as the chronic diseases are rising rapidly among workers in the mining industry.

“As a mining resource company, we realise how concerning and damaging these figures are for the mining industry and we want to do everything possible to raise awareness to counteract these serious results,” said Mr Handel.

“Many minors are at risk of type 2 diabetes or heart disease because of their inactive lifestyle and the sedentary nature of the industry.”

“Hopefully by participating in Queensland’s biggest riding event, we can continue to raise awareness and funds to lower obesity within the mining sector and reduce these shocking figures once and for all.”

In July this year, Diabetes Queensland turned its focus to the mining sector during National Diabetes Week, in an attempt to raise awareness around type 2 diabetes its debilitating impact on sufferers.

In light of this, RST will rise alongside teams from mining giants Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton, as they cycle from Brisbane’s South Bank to Broadwater Parklands in Southport.

“Type 2 diabetes is directly linked to obesity and has many long term health complications including eye disease, kidney disease and never damage as well the number one killer – heart disease,” said Mr Handel.

“However these chronic illnesses are easily preventable by eating well, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and being physically active.”

” By raising money and awareness, we can help to ensure more focus is places on the mining sector to achieve a healthier lifestyle and reduce such life-threatening diseases among our minors.”

Teaming up with Gold Coast based company Proof Engineers, RST will design and sport special jerseys as they ride from the city to the coast in the seventh annual cycle challenge.

This will be the company’s second 100km ride together this year, after entering a team in the Gold Coast’s annual Pedal for Prostate ride hosted by Friday Warriors in May.

Business associated and training partner Sebastian Karsas from Proof Engineers said he wanted to accompany RST again in next month’s ride not only for the worthy cause, but because it endorsed the healthy lifestyle that both himself and Mr Handel live by.

“David and I go cycling together most mornings before work, it’s one of those sports that become addictive,” said Mr Karsas.

“We believe in the importance of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle and that’s the message we’re trying to get across to not the mining sector, but all of Australia.”

“By participating in this ride it is not only a chance to challenge ourselves physically, but also a great opportunity to ride for health’s sake and raise money and awareness for such a good cause.”

The annual Wilson HTM Cycle Challenge has become an integral cog in raising awareness for diabetes and heart disease across Australia.

THE 100km ride from Brisbane to the Gold Coast on October 9 is expected to attract more than 10,000 participants and raise more than $150,000 for Diabetes Australia (Queensland) and the Heart Foundation.
RST technical and development director David Handel said the supplier made contact with RST direct through the company’s website.

Figures this year reveal 75 per cent of Australian miners are overweight and at risk of type 2 diabetes, which has prompted major corporations such as Reynolds Soil Technologies (RST) to enter a team of 25.

RST technical and development director David Handel says many miners are at high risk because of their inactive lifestyle.

“By participating in this ride it is not only a chance to challenge ourselves physically, but also a great opportunity to ride for health’s sake and raise money and awareness for such a good cause,” he says.

“Type 2 diabetes is directly linked to obesity and has many long term health complications including eye disease, kidney disease and nerve damage as well as the number one killer- heart disease.

“However, these chronic illnesses are easily preventable by eating well, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and being physically active.”

In July, Diabetes Queensland turned its focus to the mining sector during National Diabetes Week, so RST will be riding alongside teams from mining giants Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton from Brisbane’s South Bank to Broadwater Parklands in Southport.

Teaming up with Gold Coast bases company Proof Engineers, RST will design and wear special jerseys as they ride from the city to the coast in the seventh annual cycle challenge. More into at: mycause.com.au

RST enters Peruvian market

Date: 25 August 2011

Queensland-based dust suppression company, Reynolds Soil Technologies (RST) has continued its overseas expansion with a move into the Peruvian market.

“The Australian-owned company says it has experienced rapid global expansion in the past 18 months and has now signed an agreement with a supplier in Peru to set up an onshore distribution centre in Lima to supply dust solutions to the company’s mines.

RST technical and development director David Handel said the supplier made contact with RST direct through the company’s website.

“The businesses we have teamed up with supply commercial products to mines and they saw the opportunities of working with us to develop, offer and supply complete dust management solutions to the mining industry in Peru,” he said.

“Mines can’t move forward unless dust is under control. That is one of the biggest issues for them, and it’s one that we bring under control in a range of solutions and tailored strategies.”

The move into Peru follows RST’s recent establishment of distribution centres in Brazil in 2010 and the Philippines earlier this year. The company also has current projects operating internationally in South Africa, Asia and New Caledonia.

RST co-director Peter Parkinson said the company’s growth objective included plans to bolster its international business market by 25 per cent.
“We are always looking for opportunities to expand and develop overseas,” said Mr Parkinson.

“As an Australian company, we recognise our on shore projects are our platform operations, the foundations of our success, and we will always maintain building our core client base here in Australia.

“However international markets offer a wealth of opportunity and slowly but surely we are building a presence and recognition among overseas markets.”
