When dust settles, RST is there
Gold coast bases mining services company Reynolds Soil Technologies is applying its revolutionary dust suppression products at some of the country’s busiest shipping ports.
After completing trials on the east coast and in Western Australia, RST is now working with port authorities to secure permanent contracts.
RST technical and development director David Handel said the management of dust control during the transportation of the minerals from the mines to ship required specific procedures and technology.
“We work with a variety of shipping ports throughout Australia which are extremely proactive in managing the entire shipping process,” he said.
“Shipping ports already work on strict environmental guidelines. We ware helping them to meet these guidelines and complement the procedures they already have in place. We also offer cost-effective, water-saving solutions and our proven technologies work.”
The Burleigh-based RST is using its Superskin technology to control mineral and coal dust at shipping ports.
Superskin is a breakthrough veneer eco dust suppressant which is said to use up to 90 percent less product than RST’s competitors.
“Shipping ports are a new growth area for us,” said Mr Handel.
“We ensure the transportation and movement of products is completed in the safest and cleanest possible way, in what is generally a move pristine environment near the ocean and towns.”
RST which has 31 staff across Australia and turns over $7 million a year, earlier this year announced plans to build a new factory in Brazil.

Dust Busting in Brazil
A mining services company based in Burleigh Heads has tapped into the lucrative mining rich Brazil to suppress dust in areas where some of the world’s largest mining companies are operating.
Reynolds Soil Technologies (RST) is on target to achieve double digit growth in the next 18 months and is looking at $12 annual for FY 2010-2011.
The company will also build a new manufacturing arm in the Brazilian mining capital of Belo Horizonte to meet demand for its Superskin dust suppressant product.
RST’s technical and development director David Handel, says the company will viw for a bigger slice of the $200 million market of which it now has around 20 per cent. The company RST Ambiental has been set up to alleviate carbon emissions via heavy export.
“Brazil has the hardest tax system in the world and the most confusing structure to set up business, but we have invested considerable time and money into this market,” say Handel.
“We have been importing our products to a third party factory in Brazil up until now, but that will no longer be necessary. It’s also a logistic improvement. Importing and custom clearing the product can currently take up to 90 days. If we can make it available locally, the mining companies can have our products and solutions straight away. This is an excellent kick into the marketplace for us.”
The company has been a key spoke in BHP Billiton’s excellence programs travelling the globe and showcasing its products. The latest deal follows a trade mission with former Queensland premier Peter Beattie and foreign trade delegates.
RST can now count Canadian gold miner Kinross, the worlds largest iron ore miner Vale and BHP Billiton, Xstata as its clients. “Brazil’s dust suppressant market demand would equal Australia’s,” say Handel.
“The Brazilian dust suppressant market is valued at over $100 million. If rST can get in there and maximise the opportunities, we expect huge growth for us.
“We’ve had a very good response from the large mining companies in Brazil. They have dust control problems they need solutions for, and we have tailored solutions for them.”

RST sets sights on shipping ports
Queensland mining services company Reynolds Soil Technologies (RST) is applying its revolutionary dust suppression products at some of the country’s busiest shipping ports.
After completing trials in eastern and Western Australia, RST is now working with Australia’s various port authorities, with the aim to secure permanent contracts offering a holistic approach to dust management solutions.
RST technical and development director David Handel, said the management of dust control during the transportation of the minerals from mines to ship, requires specific procedures and technology which RST has developed from over 20 years experience managing dust control on mine sites.
Handel said due to the sensitive environment of shipping port locations, the importance of their total dust management programs has become increasingly crucial.
“We work with a variety of shipping ports throughout Australia who are extremely proactive in managing the entire shipping process,” said Handel.
“Shipping ports already work on strict environmental guidelines. We are helping them to meet these guidelines and compliment the procedures they already have in place. We also offer cost-effective, water-saving solutions and our proven technologies work.”
RST is using its revolutionary Superskin technology with the application of dust control at shipping ports. Superskin is a breakthrough veneer eco dust suppressant which uses up to 90 per cent less product than any competitor in the marketplace.
The company is also using purpose designed spray systems to apply foamers, water extenders and crusting agents to the transported minerals which suppress dust enroute to the vessel. Its innovative technologies also include a non-stick agent called ‘Release It’ which is also sprayed on to the trays of the rail wagons and truck trays to effectively eliminate any carry-back to the mine sites.
“It’s total materials handling and dust prevention,” said Handel.
“This includes managing stockpiles, loading, transporting and unloading throughout the whole material supply chain, ensuring dust is kept to a minimum or totally eliminated. There is a strong market for our dust management solutions, for the entire process from mines through to the transportation and movement of materials and ultimately to the ports.”
RST is currently fielding enquiries from a number of interested shipping ports as another safeguard to protect the surrounding environment whilst increasing productivity.
“We’ve had a lot of interest and already work with some of the major ports, rails and mines throughout Australia. We also work internationally with contracts secured in South America, South Africa, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Asia and other major industry areas,” said Handel.
All RST products and solutions are tailor-made and project specific to match the individual job requirements.

Gold Coast mining firm expanding operations to Brazil
Gold Coast based mining resource company Reynolds Soil Technologies (RST) are expanding operations globally, and are building a new manufacturing arm in the mining rich country of Brazil.
With more than 20 years experience in total dust control and soil erosion solutions, RST has been operating across mines in Australia and overseas for several years, designing innovative and holistic dust suppression solutions.
As part of its South American business development strategy, RST is setting up a Brazilian manufacturing arm to meet the strong demand from mining giants in one of the biggest mining markets in the world.
RST’s technical and development director, David Handel, said in terms of market value, Brazil also represents one of the strongest markets in the world.
“Brazil’s dust suppressant market demand would equal Australia’s,” said Handel.
“The Brazilian dust suppressant market is valued at over $100 million. If RST can get in there and maximise the opportunities, we expect huge growth for us.”
Handel said RST have been building relationships in Brazil over the last two years and have received a multitude of positive outcomes.
“We have been introducing our technology and solutions to this market for the past two years, with initial trials proving very successful,” he said. “We’ve had a very good response from large mining companies in Brazil. They have dust control problems they need solutions for, and we have tailored those solutions for them.”
The launch of the Brazilian manufacturing arm for the company also comes with logistical and environmental benefits for RST and their clients. While RST have been importing their dust suppressant products to the South American country for the last two years, by establishing a manufacturing centre in Brazil, RST are also reducing their carbon footprint by reducing exports, thereby minimising carbon emissions.
“We have been importing our products to a third party factory in Brazil up until now, but that will no longer be necessary,” said Handel. “It’s also a logistic improvement. Importing and custom clearing the product can currently take up to 90 days. If we can make it available locally, the mining companies can have our products and solutions straight away. “This is an excellent kick into the marketplace for us.”
Coinciding with the Trade Queensland Mining Mission to Latin America, Handel last month joined Queensland Government representatives travelling South America to take part in Expomin, Chile’s key industry trade show, and then on to Brazil for the opening of RST’s Brazilian company’s operations.
RST has the opportunity to showcase their range of innovative dust suppressant products at Expomin and Handel said the expo was another excellent opportunity to network with some of the biggest names in the mining world, providing RST with even more exposure as a leading Queensland company making headway in Brazil.
High profile representatives that attended Expomin included Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan, former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie, as well as representatives from mining giants Xstrata, BHP, Barrick and Anglo.
The trade mission saw participants and key representatives attend Queensland Government networking functions, industry briefings, workshops, site visits and group business meetings.
