Gold Coast Expand Global Operations and Manufacturing Development in Brazil

Reynold Soil Technoloies is a mining company based on the Gold Coast. RST plans to expand global operations and development of new manufacturing in the mining resource-rich countries, Brazil. Development of manufacturing in Brazil in order to meet demand from mining companies always increase every knowledge.
RST has been operating across mines in Australia and overseas for several years, designing innovative and holistic dust suppression solutions.

As part of its South American business development strategy, RST is setting up a Brazilian manufacturing arm to meet the strong demand from mining giants in one of the biggest mining markets in the world.

RST’s technical and development director, David Handel, said in terms of market value, Brazil also represents one of the strongest markets in the world.

“Brazil’s dust suppressant market demand would equal Australia’s,” said Handel.

“The Brazilian dust suppressant market is valued at over $100 million. If RST can get in there and maximise the opportunities, we expect huge growth for us.”

Handel said RST have been building relationships in Brazil over the last two years and have received a multitude of positive outcomes.

“We have been introducing our technology and solutions to this market for the past two years, with initial trials proving very successful,” he said.

“We’ve had a very good response from large mining companies in Brazil. They have dust control problems they need solutions for, and we have tailored those solutions for them.”

The launch of the Brazilian manufacturing arm for the company also comes with logistical and environmental benefits for RST and their clients.

While RST have been importing their dust suppressant products to the South American country for the last two years, by establishing a manufacturing centre in Brazil, RST are also reducing their carbon footprint by reducing exports, thereby minimising carbon emissions.

“We have been importing our products to a third party factory in Brazil up until now, but that will no longer be necessary,” said Handel.

“It’s also a logistic improvement. Importing and custom clearing the product can currently take up to 90 days. If we can make it available locally, the mining companies can have our products and solutions straight away.

“This is an excellent kick into the marketplace for us.”

Coinciding with the Trade Queensland Mining Mission to Latin America, Handel last month joined Queensland Government representatives travelling South America to take part in Expomin, Chile’s key industry trade show, and then on to Brazil for the opening of RST’s Brazilian company’s operations.

RST has the opportunity to showcase their range of innovative dust suppressant products at Expomin and Handel said the expo was another excellent opportunity to network with some of the biggest names in the mining world, providing RST with even more exposure as a leading Queensland company making headway in Brazil.

High profile representatives that attended Expomin included Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan, former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie, as well as representatives from mining giants Xstrata, BHP, Barrick and Anglo.

The trade mission saw participants and key representatives attend Queensland Government networking functions, industry briefings, workshops, site visits and group business meetings.

Pit to Port

In a country as dry as Australia, controlling dust in a major concern from the pit to the port.

The cost of suppressing dust lies not only in employing machinery to constantly deal with the task, but also in energy usage, water usage, the hazards for employees and its environmental impact.
To overcome the ever present problem of dust onsite as well as the constantly rising associated costs, Reynold’s Soil Technologies (RST) has developed the Superskin dust suppressant.

“RST was focused on developing a suppressant that lessens the carbon footprint of a mine, while reducing water usage and therefore energy usage, but most importantly reducing the number of trucks constantly going round and spraying which can be a hazard on the mine site,” RST technical director David Handel told Australian Mining.

Superskin was developed to be a pit to port product, with Handel saying that it can be applied at every stage from the mine site to transportation via road or rail, and on stockpiles at both the port and mine site.

“It treats all the dust on mines, conveyors, stockpiles and shiploads,” he added.

Currently being tested at Newcastle University’s bulk handling TUNRA arm and by Queensland’s Proof Engineers, the crusting agent is also designed for mine sites, haulage roads, stockpiles and rail cars.

“This eco friendly super concentrate dust suppressant is designed to use 90% less product than others on the market,” Handel said.

In using less of the product, the transport costs associated with getting the suppressant on site as well as actually applying it have been drastically reduced, he said.

In recent trials of the suppressant on tailings at a mine in northern Queensland, it was noted that the mine was using approximately 90 000 litres per year to treat the tailing onsite, following trials of the Superskin the mine cut its usage down to 9000 litres of chemicals per year.

The bio degradable chemical agent works as a veneer dust suppressant while also reducing water usage on site.

“With the additives in Superskin, it can reduce water usage to zero in non traffic areas, while in traffic areas it can be reduce water usage by 50%,” Handel said.

The main focus for the product currently is the Pilbara, as “it is a key market for us,” Handel said.

Reynolds grows from Burleigh to Brazil

GOLD Coast mining services company Reynolds Soil Technologies is poised to pour millions of dollars into Brazil to build a new factory for its dust-control products.

The move is aimed at capitalising on a $100 million market in which RST already has a significant toehold.
RST, which has manufacturing bases at Burleigh Heads and Perth, has linked with several Brazilian mining majors who are trialling its products.

A successful trial period could see RST build a factory in Brazil in about a year to cater for the resource-rich South American market.

RST, which has 31 staff across Australia and turns over $7 million a year, already earns more than 40 per cent of its income from overseas.

It has forecast a jump in revenue to $10 million this financial year, with South America a key driver of that growth.

“Brazil’s dust-suppressant market demand would equal Australia’s,” said RST director and founder David Handel.

“If RST can get in there and maximise the opportunities, we expect huge growth for us.”

RST is a full-service company that develops and implements dust-management systems using products created by its own scientists.

Traditionally it has applied its products, known as ‘crusting agents’, directly at mining pits, but more recently it has extended its reach to the processing plants and ports, and to the vehicles that transport millions of tonnes of dusty coal and ore to them each year.

“We have been introducing our technology and solutions to (the South American) market for the past two years, with initial trials proving very successful,” said Mr Reynolds.

“We’ve had a very good response from large mining companies in Brazil.

“They have dust-control problems they need solutions for, and we have tailored those solutions for them.”

RST currently outsources the manufacture of its products for South America and has established a local manufacturing arm to progress plans for its own facility.

“This is an excellent kick into the marketplace for us,” said Mr Handel.

RST has secured significant contracts in Australia’s key mining regions, including the Pilbara, Hunter Valley and the Bowen Basin with resources giants BHP Billiton, Xstrata and Fortescue Mining.
